Gentry, Charles Burt

Charles Burt Gentry.

Charles Burt Gentry (October 3, 1884 - November 16, 1955) was a well-known educator and high-ranking administrative official at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut.

Gentry was born in 1884 as the son of John H. Gentry and Sarah Beaty in Drexel, Missouri. At the age of 14, he took over the management of his family's farm while going to high school. After graduation, he took his first teaching position in a rural Cass County school. He later entered the Warrensburg, Missouri State Teachers College, receiving degrees there in 1908 and 1911. During those years, he also taught mathematics and was principal of the Booneville, Missouri High School. He attended the University of Missouri, the University of Chicago, and Cornell University, where he received a master's degree in agriculture. His teaching career took him to state teachers colleges at Conway, Arkansas, and Springfield, Missouri, and to Rutgers where he served as professor of agricultural education and also part time as assistant supervisor of agriculture for the State of New Jersey.

In 1920, Gentry joined the staff of the University of Connecticut to become dean of the School of Education. During his years at Storrs, Connecticut, Gentry taught during summer vacations at many universities throughout the country, and continued his studies at Columbia University and Harvard. For a decade, he combined his duties as dean of teacher training and director of vocational education with those of supervision of agricultural education for the State Board of Education. He similarly took an active part in the drafting of national educational policies, working with the United States Department of Education. He also served as acting president in 1928-29 upon the retirement of Charles L. Beach, and again in 1935. In 1950, following 30 years of service, he retired from the position.

On November 16, 1955, Gentry died at his home in Storrs, Connecticut.
