Ellsworth (Webster), Emily Schotten

Emily Webster's tombstone.

Emily Schotten Webster (August 4, 1790 - August 23, 1861) was a resident of Hartford, Connecticut, and a religious student and writer.

Webster was born on August 4, 1790 in New Haven, Connecticut, as the daughter of Noah Webster and Rebecca Greenleaf. As the eldest child of Webster, she enjoyed the advantage of being educated under his own personal supervision and instruction. Her father's library, remarkably choice and extensive for that day, was open to her, and she became a diligent student. Her tastes led her to prefer the study of history to the reading of works of fiction, and her memory became stored with choice poetry. But religion gave the "crowning glory to all her womanly virtues." She was a diligent student of the Bible into the middle of her life.

As she approached the end of her life, her health began to fail severely, but she would say to those around her, "This is a hard hour, but I wil fold my hands and rest upon my Savior." A few hours before her death on August 23, 1861, her husband, reading to her some comforting passages of scripture, said, "I fear I have tried you in reading too long!" But she replied, "Ah! But my time is so short!" A little while before her departure, the family was summoned to her bedside, and she died soon after.
