George Herbert Day, Jr., 1926

George Herbert Day, Jr. (September 22, 1891 - March 4, 1978) was a senior partner in the law firm of Shipman & Goodwin and a judge of the Hartford, Connecticut police court.

Day was born on September 22, 1891 in Brooklyn, Connecticut, as the son of George Herbert Day, Sr. and Katherine Beach. He graduated from Yale University in 1913 and Harvard Law School in 1916, and practiced law in Connecticut all his life, specializing in trusts, estates, and contracts. From 1920-1927, he served as a prosecutor and judge of the Hartford court and in 1930 was elected chairman of the Police Board. He also served as trustee and treasurer of the Pomfret School, where he was graduated, and the Oxford School in West Hartford, Connecticut.

He was elected a director of the Phoenix State Bank and Trust Company in 1950. His great-grandfather, George Beach, Sr., was the first cashier and third president of Phoenix Bank. Day was a director of the Aetna Insurance Company, the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company, the former Niles-Bement-Pond Company, Riverside Trust Company of Hartford, Landers, Frary and Clark Company in New Britain, Connecticut, Potter and Johnson of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the former Hotel Bond Company, the Hartford Public Library, the Greater Hartford Community Chest, and was on the distribution committee of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving from 1954 to 1956. He retired from his law practice and various professional positions in 1967.

On March 4, 1978, Day died at John Dempsey Hospital after a long illness at the age of 86.
